All the books I read last year

I must admit, I am kind of a weird fellow. I am not sure that I know of anyone else who keeps track of how many pages they have read each year, but I do. I also like making fun spreadsheets to put these numbers in. Typing in “=sum(n)” is just fun. Why? I have no idea. As a result of this ridiculous bookkeeping, and since I just added the first book to my list for 2011, I have decided to show you all everything that I have read for the past year. I hope you’re not scared of the edge of your seat because you are about to be all up ons.

eBook consistency and you

I have owned a nook for nearly a year now and feel like my knowledge of all things eBookery is vast like the Sahara, or at least as vast as purchasing and reading a dozen books on the thing is. However vast that knowledge is, that’s pretty much what I have. In my time with the device, I have come to love quite a bit about it, but there are definitely still some shortcomings, I feel, with the medium itself.

Behemoth – sequel to Leviathan – out tomorrow

The fall must be the greatest time for steampunk, because just as the leaves have started to turn brown, two great books have arrived on shelves to sate your appetite for brass pipe and gauge-laden everything. Last week, we had seen the arrival of Dreadnought, and tomorrow you can pick up Behemoth, by Scott Westerfeld.

Do not dread the Dreadnought [steampunk]

Steampunk art is so great.
An author that I personally enjoy – and one that we have talked about before – has, as of today, released a new novel entitled Dreadnought. Who is this person? Well, if you can use your eyes to see, you might have gleaned from the image above that her name is Cherie Priest. We had a post about her a while back if you have been paying attention. So what’s all the hubbub about this novel?

Reading test: Electronic stuff vs. books

A study posted at useit.com, focusing on reading speeds, has pitted our heroes (iPads and Kindles) against their nemesis: the printed page. It’s a study that we’ve all wanted to see; these two sets of media battling it out in a colosseum while a wizened scroll looks on from shadowy booth high among the crowd. The two fight for hours, bits of pages and plastic blowing absently in the wind. There is a hush; the scroll lifts a shaking hand, and with a sudden motion that belies his age: thumbs down. One warrior does not leave the ring.

But this is about reading speeds and satisfaction. How do all of these things stack up?
